Loft progress!

February 23, 2012by Christina
My husband rocks.  He finished the ladder to our loft this week and it’s awesome.  It’s so easy to get frustrated with a “lack of progress” on projects.  But I came across this photo today as I was documenting his work: The MLS photo of our bedroom before we bought the house.  And yes, that’s […]

My husband rocks.  He finished the ladder to our loft this week and it’s awesome.  It’s so easy to get frustrated with a “lack of progress” on projects.  But I came across this photo today as I was documenting his work:
The MLS photo of our bedroom before we bought the house.  And yes, that’s all there is to our bedroom.

Then when I see the photo I just took of our work so far, it really makes me mad at myself for being frustrated.

A little bit different, I’d say.  (Wish I could get a wide-angle picture like the original.)

It glides so smoothly across the tracks he built in to the beams, just pull it down or push it up.  Yep, he rocks.  Now we have the sweetest little library up there.
Sorry, it’s a terrible shot taken late at night and with the phone…I was just so excited to have built my first bookshelf.
I built the bookshelf to fit the length and angles.  And I used Lillian’s idea for the IKEA spice racks wall-mounted bookshelves, to store our current reads.

The seating up there is a challenge, since it’s only 6 feet in the center.  It had to be really low, and there isn’t room for two chairs, so it had to be one wide enough for both of us.  I’m in the process of taking apart a shipping pallet and reassembling it as a chair.  I’ll post on it when I have more done.

Hubs built the ladder out of red oak, which is what our ceiling beams are made of, so that makes it super-handy for sanding and staining–everything should turn out pretty much the same color.  For the staining, I’m pretty sure we’re going to go with a driftwood gray.  I’m in love with the color.  My only concern is that it will be dated too soon.  Any thoughts anyone?

Again, the room is far from being decorated, I want to paint the wardrobes (if I can’t replace them all together).  And you can see the ceiling above the bed still has only the swatch of paint on it.  It is such an ordeal to paint a ceiling!  But really like the “Grasscloth Green” and the suzanni pillow and that’s what I still plan to base our bedroom design on, now that the bulk of the architecture is finished.

Hi, I’m Christina.

Little Victorian is your place for inspiration, education, and encouragement for how to be your own interior designer and decorator, and how to carry out your big plans yourself too.

It starts with psychology, then artistry, and ends with power tools. None of those are scary, and you really can do it.
