Long Distance Decorating: A sewing room

I mentioned last week that I’m helping to decorate a room for someone.  It’s going to be a sewing room. I mentioned last week that I’m helping to decorate a room for someone.  It’s going to be a sewing room.

Generally, sewing rooms are pretty kitschy.  That’s not what we’re going for here.  The lady of the house has a very tailored (ha!), sophisticated style.  She’s always liked black and white and bold colors, done in a simple, streamlined way.

Here are our inspiration photos:

We decided to go with black, white, and gray with bright yellow accents.  Here is what the room currently looks like:

The only thing that needs to stay are the two tables.

First, the walls are going to be painted gray and the doors glossy black.  The carpet will be taken up and replaced with cork (eventually).  We are going to put in a wall of storage (where the artwork is in the first photo).

We’re currently brainstorming how to dress up the folding tables.  Any ideas?

How about covering the tops of the tables with white oil cloth and stapling it on the bottom (or just painting them white) and then adding a black ribbon trim on all the edges? That would seem quite similar as the sofa in the first inspiration picture. I like the legs of the tables as they are.

I really like that idea! Even just the ribbon would make a huge difference. I think you’re right about the legs. They were really bothering me because they just look like plastic folding tables, but they don’t actually look bad.

Hi, I’m Christina.

Little Victorian is your place for inspiration, education, and encouragement for how to be your own interior designer and decorator, and how to carry out your big plans yourself too.

It starts with psychology, then artistry, and ends with power tools. None of those are scary, and you really can do it.
