Railings, railings, railings

I was going to wait until the entire deck was finished to show it to you, but due to the weather, it’s taking waaaay longer than we expected.ย  We’ve had rain almost every day for the last two weeks, and it is supposed to continue until this weekend.

The sky did give us a break yesterday evening, though for a few hours and we got some more railings built and installed.ย  And now we have 14 of the 16 sections of railing done.

Railings (4)

We got to this point when the rain and thunder started rolling in:

Railings (8)

So close!ย  It’s hard to tell, but Hubs is standing on a staircase that goes down to the back yard.ย  To give you a better idea of the whole-picture, here is the layout of the deck:

Deck-layout

We just have 4 small sections of railing, and a gate for the front steps left to build.ย  It could all be done in an afternoon.

The railings definitely do distract from the view we love so much, but, they also make the deck feel both cozier and larger.ย  We’re probably going to be spending a lot more time out on the deck this summer since it’s so much more pleasant, so we’re working on a couple ideas to make it even more fun.

I’d love a hanging chair, or 4, but the cost is just not in the budget.ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

Wow looking good! Not much work anymore as you already know. Will you be painting it too?
I’m interested what type of fire place you will have on a wooden deck.

Thanks, Leena! I’d love for it to be painted, but the maintenance is too much for me. Still debating whether to stain it or let it turn gray. The layout was actually from how it was before, it might change a little. We just had a metal fire bowl, there were never any issues, but if we get another one, we’ll put some stone pavers under it for extra protection.

Isn’t weather just the funnest thing to deal with???

It’s looking amazing so far. I’m glad my new place has a deck, or I’d be having some serious deck envy… ๐Ÿ˜€

Oh, I with you on the weather! At least it’s helping the garden grow! The railings look great–very “Victorian” in the detailing which is perfect for you, o f course!

Yes, hopefully you’ve gotten enough of a break to work on your cabinets again!

Hi Christine. That deck is fantastic – it’s huge and I’m sure that you’ll live out there in the summer months, it will be another room for the house. Save up for that swinging chair! Mel xx

This deck is massive! I loved the picture on Instagram of your pooch just lounging on it.

Aw, thanks! He is a lot happier out there now than before. ๐Ÿ™‚ It never felt bigger than when we were rebuilding it.

Hi, I’m Christina.

Little Victorian is your place for inspiration, education, and encouragement for how to be your own interior designer and decorator, and how to carry out your big plans yourself too.

It starts with psychology, then artistry, and ends with power tools. None of those are scary, and you really can do it.
