DIY chalkboard tray

How about a tray makeover? How about a tray makeover?

We’ve had this tray since we got married, whether some one gave it to us or we purchased it, I don’t remember anymore.  We certainly thought it was cute and we’ve used it regularly since acquiring it 6 years ago.  But it’s time for an update.  It’s always holding something in the office/craft room/guest room, but now it’s going to work a little more efficiently.

This is such an easy project, it could be done on any tray you have laying around or one from the clearance section of the craft store, as long as you like the shape!

Sand it down and then wipe it off with a damp cloth:

Spray paint: (The teal I chose ended up being the same color as the painting tarp.)

You could just paint the whole thing and call it a day (clear coat it, please, if you’re rough on things like me) OR, you could not worry too much about painting the center because you’re going to cover it in chalkboard or dry erase vinyl, like this:

If you’re using chalkboard vinyl or contact paper, just measure the inside dimensions of the tray, cut the paper, peel and stick.  Or you could use chalkboard paint and paint the center.

Here is how I will likely use my newly refinished tray:

Pile in the projects I have to work on that day, or maybe like this:

Not sure yet, but it was a really fun project and hopefully it will help in getting me a little more organized around here.

P.S.  My posts have been hit or miss lately.  Sorry.  I’ve decided to make a schedule for myself and keep everything more organized on the blog too, in addition to life in general.  I plan on getting back to the Monday, Wednesday and Friday posts and staying on topic each week with related rooms and projects.  Thanks for sticking with me through the disorganization so far.  See you Friday!  🙂

Wow that is cool! Superb idea! And I happen to have jar of chalkboard paint…

I also blog Mon, Wed and Fri. I think it has helped me to get things posted since without the schedule I might think that if my ideas are even blogworthy. Or I could postpone some ideas forever, but now that I “have to” blog, I cannot do that and that is good. Atleast the schedule has worked for me.

Thank you. 🙂 The blog has totally renewed my dedication to getting projects done around the house. And I’m glad you post 3 times a week to, because I love reading yours.

Back once more – tried to follow you using your Connect with me link: got Error 404 on it. Just in case you did not know.

Maybe I should try my blog as well to finally finish some projects I have lying around 😉

Hi, I’m Christina.

Little Victorian is your place for inspiration, education, and encouragement for how to be your own interior designer and decorator, and how to carry out your big plans yourself too.

It starts with psychology, then artistry, and ends with power tools. None of those are scary, and you really can do it.
